He founded the hospital at Lambarene in Gabon in 1913, giving organ recitals to support his work there. He wrote a life of German composer J S Bach and Von reimarus zu Wrede/The Quest for the Historical Jesus 1906. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952 for his teaching of "reverence for life".
